The ISSW (International Snow Science Workshop) is the largest snow and avalanche conference in the world.
Since 1976 it has been held 22 times biennial in the USA, Europe and Canada. Innsbruck will be the third European venue.
The success of the ISSW lies in its motto:

"A Merging of Theory and Practice"

Advances in snow and avalanche research and reports from the field are essential elements of the conference.
The focus is to promote the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences between snow science researchers and practitioners.
The Innsbruck conference in 2018 bases on this concept.
The main goal is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences between snowmakers and practitioners through numerous activities.
Thus, the congress offers outstanding networking opportunities for national and international participants.

The successful organization and implementation of the ISSW takes place against the unique backdrop and atmosphere of Innsbruck.
An urban center surrounded by steep mountains offers both the background of the professional exchange and program as well as countless possibilities for leisure-seekers.
A wide selection of international winter-related industries, the extensive history of the region
(including the Olympic Winter Games 1964 and 1976, the Paralympics 1984 and the Olympic Youth Winter Games 2012)
as well as the numerous local prestigious ski resorts pave the way for an attractive meeting week.

Furthermore, the large accompanying exhibition at the congress strengthens the local and international value of the ISSW 2018.

For the first time, in order to promote the ISSW motto, one day of the conference is dedicated to a broader public: "ISSW goes public"
At this event, local and international experts are invited to discuss the complex issue "Forests and sustainability - mountains and natural hazards”.
The thematic focus of the day is organized in close cooperation with the EUSALP Group and the Alpine Convention.
In this context, questions such as "Sustainable safeguarding of habitat in the mountains - but how?" will be discussed among a wide audience.
